Marseille have been ordered to play a Ligue 1 home game behind closed doors due to repeated use of flares by their fans, the club has confirmed.

Marseille intended to appeal the decision made by the French League, the club said on its website (www.om.net).

“This sanction is out of proportion and I can’t believe it will become effective,” Marseille Chairman Pape Diouf said.

The former European champions are second in the Ligue 1 standings, a point behind Lyon with nine matches left to play. Their next home game is against Grenoble on April 12.
