A must-win game for Fenerbache tonight against Arsenal in the Champions League, with the Turkish side sitting on just one point.

Javier Mascherano is looking to hold talks with new Argentina coach Diego Maradona before making a decision on captaining his country.

Maradona has signalled his intention to name Liverpool midfielder Mascherano as the country’s new skipper.

Mascherano has yet to accept the offer and is hoping to meet with Maradona to discuss the captaincy.

“For respect I don’t want to talk about this, but obviously we will see,” Mascherano told Sky Sports News.

“I need to talk with Diego and to know what he wants.”

Mascherano has won the support of his Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez for the captaincy role.

“Mascherano has the character and mentality to be a captain,” said Benitez.

“It is an important situation for anyone – to captain their country. If someone says to you that you can be captain of England or Argentina or Spain, it is a massive honour because they are big, big countries.

“If he has the chance he could do it.”
