PAOK Salonika, who earlier this week, fired coach Nikos Karageorgiou are close to signing Lothar Matthaus as his replacement.

“The deal is not done yet but we are close to it. Mr Matthaus will be in Salonika towards the end of the week to watch the team in action and we should seal the deal then,” the official told Reuters.

Matthaeus has been Hungary’s national team coach since the beginning of last year.

PAOK are currently in 11th place with two points from their opening five matches. They also drew 1-1 at home in their UEFA Cup first round match against Metallurg Donetsk last week.
