Wayne Rooney is odds-on to be Premiership top scorer after adding his 20th against Arsenal – see the odds here

Christoph Metzelder believes that joining Real Madrid was a big mistake as he feels that he has wasted three seasons of his career.

The 29-year-old defender joined Los Merengues in 2007 from Borussia Dortmund and was regarded as one of Germany’s best centre-backs, but the move quickly turned sour.

Just 22 appearances for Madrid has meant that he has lost his place in the German national team and become a forgotten man.

“I do not think that the club will extend my contract,” he told Kicker.

“But even if things suddenly changed then I would look to end my adventure at Real Madrid.

“I dreamed of playing alongside such players, but in all honesty, they have been three lost years.”

Metzelder played in all of Germany’s matches at Euro 2008, but now believes that he has little chance of making Joachim Low’s World Cup squad.

“If I was being realistic I would have to say that I will almost certainly not be there,” he added.

“I have not had any contact with Jogi Low in almost a year. And the national team coach has never really tried to come and see me live.”
