Newcastle United have offered a new contract to striker Michael Owen.

The 29-year-old’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season and could leave Tyneside on a free transfer next summer should if he fails to agree new terms.

Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear confirmed after Sunday’s 3-0 victory at Portsmouth that plans were in place to open discussions this week.

Owen, who has been plagued by injuries since arriving at St James’ Park from Real Madrid in 2005, has scored 25 Premier League goals in 56 appearances since the move.
