Newcastle have failed to quell speculation that Jermaine Jenas has submitted a transfer request.

The club are refusing to comment on reports claiming the 22-year-old England midfielder wants to leave St James’ Park aid speculation that he has been involved in a bust-up with manager Graeme Souness.

Arsenal enquired about Jenas’ availability last month but were quoted £20m for him, but with Newcastle now prepared to accept £10m both the Gunners and their north London rivals Tottenham will be monitoring the situation.

Souness, angry at suggestions Jenas missed this week’s InterToto tie with Deportivo La Corun because he is going to be sold, said: “This is absolute nonsense. The only reason JJ was not involved was because he was injured.”
