Newcastle boss Graeme Souness has not given up hope of signing Michael Owen, despite the Real Madrid striker’s assertion that he wants to join Liverpool.

Owen revealed earlier in the week that he would prefer to return to his former club Liverpool, who have expressed an interest in bringing him back.

Newcastle have agreed a club record fee of £17m with Real Madrid for Owen.

Souness said: “Our offer for Michael is still on the table, we’ve spoken to his advisors and they’re considering it.”

Newcastle’s declaration comes as a surprise after they revealed earlier today that they hasd agreed a fee with Deportivo La Coruna for their striker Albert Luque.

Chairman Freddy Shepherd had given Owen a deadline of Thursday to agree to mov.

“There is not much more we can do. We are waiting to hear from Owen and his adviser,” Shepherd stated.

“But it has to happen today or it’s not going to happen at all, and we will be speaking to Michael’s people.”
