Palermo have fired coach Stefano Colantuono after just one game of the new Serie A season on Thursday, replacing him with former Cagliari boss Davide Ballardini.

Colantuono, who was also dismissed by Palermo last season only to be reinstated later in the campaign, lost his job after the 3-1 defeat to Udinese on Saturday.

The week before, Palermo were embarrassingly knocked out of the Italian Cup by third division Ravenna.

“Palermo have relieved Stefano Colantuono of the post of first team coach,” the club said on their website (www.ilpalermocalcio.it).

“The post has been entrusted to Davide Ballardini, who will lead the squad from this afternoon’s training session.”

Ballardini kept Cagliari in the top flight last term after taking over mid-season when they were rooted to the foot of the table, but he failed to reach an agreement with the Sardinian club for a contract renewal.
