Giuseppe Papadopulo is quitting as coach of Lazio after failing to reach agreement on a new contract.

Papadopulo replaced Mimmo Caso midway through the season, and he managed to steer the club clear of the relegation zone. But he will leave the club when his current contract expires on June 30 .

“Before the choice of the new coach we will have to prepare a plan,” Lazio chief Claudio Lotito told Corriere dello Sport. “It will be ready within a week.

“Anyway I can give an identikit of the new coach. He would have professionalism, morality, affection for the club, the will to value young players and the financial compatibility with the club’s budget.

“There are many coaches on the market who could be useful for us.

“I chose Papadopulo to solve a difficult situation and he has been a good ‘ferry man’ in the most complicated moment.”

Former Italy national team boss Giovanni Trapattoni, who resigned this week as Benfica coach on Tuesday, has been tipped to take over at the Roman club.
