Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce insists he can handle the pressure as his side’s poor run continued with a shock Carling Cup defeat to League One team Chesterfield.

The 2-1 defeat was City’s 13th defeat in their last 16 games.

“I’m under pressure but that goes with the territory,” said Pearce. “I believe I am big enough to take anything that comes my way.

“I work fairly hard, I’m just going to have to work a touch harder and make sure I turn things around.

“It’s very disappointing but the manager has to take the flak,” he added. “I have to take the stick for it – and I will.

“To be fair I don’t think professional football is the sort of game where you stick your head in the sand and hope your problems go away.

“You face them front on and you work harder than I believe I work at the moment.”
