Portugal midfielder Petit is set to sign for newly-promoted Bundesliga side Cologne for an undisclosed amount.
The 31-year-old Benfica midfielder, who announced his retirement from international football after last month’s Euro 2008, was set to have a medical examination in Cologne on Wednesday.
“I always wanted to play in a different league, always try a new league out,” he said.
“Benfica have given me so much and I am grateful, but I believe in the project in Cologne.
“This is the contract of my life.”
