Stilian Petrov has signed a contract extension with Celtic that will keep him at the club until 2009.

The 26-year-old Bulgarian midfielder had been linked with a move away from Parkheam, but the new deal ends speculation about his immediate future.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said: “Stilian has already been a tremendous servant.

“And he will be a key player for Celtic in the years ahead.

“Clearly, everyone at the club is delighted that we have secured the services of such a quality player,” said Lawwell.

“The Celtic board is pleased to retain such a talent at Celtic Park and we will continue to do all we can to support Gordon in his plans for the future.

“This signing confirms the board’s high ambitions for the club going forward.”
