Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar has been charged with drink driving, Merseyside Police have confirmed.

The 27-year-old was arrested early on Sunday morning, only hours after Everton’s 3-1 victory over Manchester United.

A police spokesman said: “He was arrested at the junction of London Road and Lime Street and later charged with drink driving and failure to comply with a traffic sign.”

South Africa international Pienaar will appear at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on March 9.

Pienaar arrived at Goodison Park on loan in the summer of 2007. The move later became permanent after his club signed a £2.05m deal with former club Dortmund.

He last had a brush with the law in October 2008 when he was quizzed by police after an alleged assault in the Sefton Park area. No charges were ever brought against the player.
