Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires has deferred making a decision on his future until January.

The Frenchman’s contract expires next summer and although he had been hoping for a new two-year deal at Highbury he has only been offered a 12-month extension.

“We’ll talk again in January,” said Pires. “There is nothing new about my contract situation and things are not going to change now.

“I’m going to play through the last year of my contract and I’ll meet with manager Arsene Wenger early in the New Year,” said the 32-year-old midfielder.

“That will be the source of motivation for me in the months before then.

“I’m going to be in the same position as Dennis Bergkamp has been in for some years.”

Pires is the victim of Arsenal’s policy of offering only 12 month contracts to their senior players. He has been linked with moves to Juventus and Galatasaray in recent months.
