Police investigating corruption within football raided Birmingham City in the early hours of this morning.

The raid is understood to relate to the Lord Stevens inquiry commissioned by the Premier League’s chief executive, Richard Scudamore, which focused on illicit payments to players’ agents. There is no suggestion that Birmingham have done anything illegal.

“The club is fully cooperating with the police in their inquiries which relate to an unconnected third party or third parties,” a statement on the club’s website said.

“For the avoidance of doubt no one connected with the club has been questioned or arrested.”

“We can confirm that officers from the City of London Police executed a search warrant at a premises this morning in connection with the ongoing investigation into football corruption,” a police spokeswoman said.

The Stevens inquiry failed to produce evidence of irregular payments during its nine-month inquiry, and in January turned to the FA for assistance in forcing eight agents to cooperate with its inquiries into 17 suspicious transfers.
