Portugal’s Football Federation are to announce on 21 October the name of their new coach.

Caretaker coach Agostinho Oliviera stepped down from the position following Portugal’s 3-2 friendly victory over Sweden.

The Portuguese Football Federation, who will host Euro 2004, have to date refused to comment on press speculation about the position.

The departure of former Porto coach, Fernando Santos, from his role at Panathinaikos, has fuelled speculation in Lisbon that he will be named as coach. Santos departed the Greek side, by mutual consent, after leading them to their worst ever start in a league campaign.

Also touted for the Portuguese position is former Boavista, Benfica and Sporting coach Manuel Jose. The coach will replace Antonio Oliveira who was sacked after Portugal’s early exit from the World Cup.
