The Primera Liga has been forced to extend the season by another week to finish on May 20, after Sevilla and Barcelona both reached European finals.

The problem arose when Sevilla’s league match at home against Barcelona was called off on April 23 due to a waterlogged pitch.

With Sevilla in the UEFA Cup final on May 10, Barcelona in the Champions League final on May 17, and four rounds of matches still to play in the league there is no time left to play the abandoned match.

The revised schedule proposes Sevilla play Barcelona on Wednesday May 3, which had been earmarked for a full league programme, pushing the final three rounds of matches back to May 7, May 14 and May 20.

The changes need to be approved by FIFA as the new deadline goes beyond the May 15 date set for when leagues had to have completed to allow coaches to prepare their squads for this sumemr’s World Cup.
