PSG sack Halilhodzic

February 9, 2005

Paris Saint Germain coach Vahid Halilhodzic has been sacked, the French first division club have confirmed.

Chairman Francis Graille had insisted on Monday that the coach would be given until after a cup game against Bordeaux at the weekend - but decided to sack the Bosnian on Tuesday evening.

Conflicting reports as to why Halilhodzic was fired have been circulating. The French press claimed that the decision of the players to refuse to go to a training camp precipitated Halilhodzic's removal.

Halilhodzic's position was weakened following the 2-0 loss to lowly Lens in a league game at the Parc des Princes on Sunday. That defeat left the club perched just above the relegation zone with just four points from six games this year.

The Lens game was marked by protests from the PSG supporters with many refusing to cheer for their side and raising banners demanding that Halilhodzic step aside.
