Real Madrid could enter the race to sign Lyon striker Karim Benzema following a cooling of their interest in Valencia’s David Villa.

Madrid were thought to be keen on a move for Benzema in 12 months time, after the 2010 World Cup, but may now change their strategy after Lyon hinted that the player could become available.

“Nothing is impossible and if we receive a good offer we will not close the door to anyone,” Bernard Lacombe, adviser to Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas, told Spanish daily Marca.

Madrid had previously declared an interest in signing Villa but Valencia appear determined not to drop their 40million euro asking price for the Spain forward.

“We take Valencia at their word and we respect their decision [not to sell Villa] and so that is why we are changing target,” Real director general Jorge Valdano said.
