Real Madrid fell two games sort in their attempt to match Brazilian club Coritiba’s world record of 24 straight wins as they went down 2-1 at Valencia.

Cristiano Ronaldo put Real ahead from the penalty spot with his 33rd goal of the season, but the hosts hit back through Antonio Barragan and Nicolas Otamendi.

It was Real’s first defeat since they lost to city rivals and defending La Liga champions Atletico Madrid in September, after which they won a club record 22 consecutive games in all competitions.

With Barcelona losing 1-0 to David Moyes’ Real Sociedad, six points now separate the top five in Spain.

Barcelona’s and Real Madrid’s loss meant both giants of the Spanish game were beaten on the same day for the first time since 30 April 2011
