Real Madrid striker Ronaldo is doubtful for his side’s Champions League match against Milan on Wednesday after suffering a thigh strain.

The Brazilian was taken off at halftime of Saturday’s 4-1 league win against Racing Santander to rest him for the Milan match, but it now appears that the precaution was unnecessary.

“Ronaldo felt a pain in his left thigh during the Racing game and we decided to take him off to avoid the risk of a muscle tear,” club doctor Alfonso del Corral told reporters on Monday.

“The muscle is a little irritated and we are going to be giving him treatment, but he will be doubtful for the Milan match.”

The defending European champion’s position in the knockout stages is by no means assured. Defeat to Milan could open the door for Borussia Dortmund who lie a point adrift of the Spanish side.
