Cristiano Ronaldo has moved closer to adding the World Player of the Year award to the European version he picked up last week after making FIFA’s five-man shortlist.
The Portugal winger’s 42 goals helped Manchester United win the Premier League and the Champions League last season.
Lionel Messi, who led Argentina to an Olympic gold medal, is also on the shortlist along with Spain’s Euro 2008 Fernando Torres and Xavi as well as last year’s winner Kaka.
The shortlist was produced from a poll of coaches and captains of national teams around the world.
