Milan midfielder Clarence Seedorf believes stopping Wayne Rooney will be the key to getting defeating Manchester United.

The teams meet in tonight’s Champions League first knockout round, and Seedorf knows that keeping in-form England international Rooney quiet will boost their chances of success.

“It’s not the draw that the squad wanted, but it’s important we believe and show plenty of fight,” Seedorf told skysports.com.

“United are in good Premier League form and obviously our performances in recent weeks have not been great.

“The key will be defence. If we can keep United off the scoresheet then we’ll have a better chance in the return leg.

“Rooney’s in spectacular form at the moment and it’s important we stop him. We’ve watched videos of him.

“To end his form it’s necessary we give 200 per cent and to dominate in midfield to stop them from playing in Rooney.

“I’m not surprised people think United are the favourites, but I believe it’s 50/50.”
