Deputies from the Russian State Duma, from the United Russia and Fair Russia parties, have asked for FIFA to revoke the membership of the USA.
Aleksandr Sidyakin and Mikhail Markelov have written an official letter to world football’s governing body, asking for the USA men’s football team to be omitted from the 2014 World Cup and for their membership of the organisation to be terminated forthwith.
The letter cites the USA’s aggressive actions against Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya as well as their attempts to encroach on Syria, as the reasoning for asking for the US to be banned.
“It’s an eye for an eye, a ball for a ball. Don’t let the USA take part in the 2014 World Cup! End their membership of FIFA”, Sidyakin wrote on his twitter page.
The correspondence was a tit-for-tat response to a letter sent by Republican senators, Mark Kirk of Illionois and Dan Coates of Indiana, who asked FIFA to ban Russia from the 2014 World Cup, over its invasion of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula.
Betraying a singularly American ignorance of very recent history whilst simultaneously invoking Godwin’s law, Coates compared the Russian president’s territorial ambitions to those of Nazi Germany, saying: “Does this not remind us of what happened with Hitler in the early 20s and 30s?”
No, not really.
