Coach Fred Rutten has confirmed that he will leave Schalke at the end of the season following talks with the Bundesliga club’s management.

Schalke have had a disappointing season under the Dutchman in his first season in the German top division and they sacked general manager Andreas Mueller earlier this month.

“Managing director Peter Peters has told me there is no future for Fred Rutten at Schalke next season,” Rutten told reporters.

Schalke, who finished third in the league last season, are in eighth place in the table, 12 points off the top. They have also been eliminated from the German Cup and the UEFA Cup.

Rutten, 46, has previously coached Dutch side Twente Enschede and was an assistant coach at PSV Eindhoven.
