Luiz Felipe Scolari, who coached Brazil to World Cup success, has agreed to become the new coach of Portugal.

Chairman of the Portuguuese FA, Gilberto Madail, spoke to Scolari yesterday and accoording to the Braziilian’s agent, an announcement is expected in the new few days.

‘Talks are going well and there has been regular contact between Madail and Scolari. We may announce a deal within days,’ said a spokesman for the Portuguese FA.

‘They talked and said OK,’ said Scolari’s adviser Asaz Felenger.’Each gave the other his word. Scolari will be Portuguese national coach until July 2004, until after Euro 2004,’

If appointed, Scolari will replace Agostinho Oliveira, who has been standing in since Antonio Oliveira was fired after Portugal’s dismal performance at the World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan.
