Brazil’s World Cup-winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is the top target to be appointed national coach of Portugal.

Portuguese football federation president Gilberto Madail is expected to meet Scolarilater this week to offer him the job of managing the Portugal who, as hosts, have already qualified for the 2004 European championships.

Scolari stepped down as Brazil coach after this summer’s World Cup Final. He has linked with jobs in Mexico, Uruguay and Italy, but has so far rejected all offers.

Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durao Barroso has added his backing to the choice of Scolari as Portugal coach.

Last week the Portuguese federation confirmed it would be seeking to appoint a foreigner as national coach.
