Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos has been ruled out of Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final at Villarreal with a knee injury.

Senderos, a member of Arsenal’s record-breaking defence in this season’s European campaign, picked up the injury in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur and has not travelled to Spain for the second leg.

His absence means a return for Sol Campbell, who has been plagued by injury all season and is desperate for matches to boost his World Cup chances with England.

French left back Gael Clichy returns to the squad, having been out of action since last November with a broken foot.

Arsenal lead the tie 1-0 after last week’s victory at Highbury.
