It goes from bad to worse for Newcastle, with the news that club captain Alan Shearer has been charged by UEFA for alleged use of the elbow in the club’s Champions League clash with Inter last night.

Newcastle lost 4-1 to Hector Cuper’s side, a defeat compounded by Craig Bellamy’s fourth minute dismissal and now by the news that Shearer is being charged for allegedly elbowing defender Fabio Cannavaro.

The incident was missed by referee Stephane Bre, but UEFA have reviewed video evidence from the game and decided the former England striker has a case to answer.

Bellamy has already served a three-match suspension after being found guilty of headbutting an opponent during Newcastle’s Champions League encounter with Dinamo Kyiv. If found guilty, Shearer could face a similar suspension.
