Liverpool have made a bid for Spanish international midfielder Xabi Alonso, according to Real Sociedad.

“The English representatives showed interest in signing the player and the Spanish club expressed interest in selling the player,” said a statement issued by the Basque club.

Alonso, 22, would be regarded as a replacement for Danny Murphy, who earlier today joined Charlton.

Real Madrid were also reported to have made a bid for the Spanish international midfielder, but after seeing their initial offer rejected, they turned their attention to Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira.
