Former Roma coach Luciano Spalletti is being lined up to take over at Zenit St Petersburg, according to reports in the Italian press.

La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Spalletti will replace Anatoli Davydov at the end of the current campaign, although they say he has included a get out clause if the Russians fail to qualify for the Champions League.

He is due to earn €4million a season for two seasons with an option on a third season.

Spalletti walked out on Roma two games into this season following four successful years at the club in which Roma finished second in Serie A three times, won two Italian cups and twice reached the Champions League quarter-finals, losing to Manchester United on both occasions.

However his last full season at Roma was his worst as the club finished only sixth and having begun this season with two defeats, Spalletti resigned.
