Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson could be handed additional transfer funds if the club’s owner, Thaksin Shinawatra, clears his name when he returns to Thailand to face allegations of fraud.
The former Thai prime minister is preparing to fly to Thailand after taking the decision to return to his homeland for the first time since taking over Manchester City last summer.
He expects to be arrested and bailed but, after several weeks of negotiations, he is confident the ruling PPP party will clear him and he will then attempt to regain control of the assets that were seized and frozen last year.
If all goes according to plan, Thaksin will use some of the money to make City one of the the wealthier clubs in Europe.
Sitha Tivaree, who was a spokesman for Thaksin’s ruling party, has travelled to Hong Kong to meet Thaksin today.
“I have no detail about Khun Thaksin’s return on Thursday. But I will definitely travel with him back to Bangkok tomorrow,” he told The Nation newspaper.
