Benfica midfielder Tiago Mendes has undergone a medical at Chelsea with a view to completing his move to the Premier League club.

The 23-year-old Portuguese international is expected to complete a deal before Wednesday, the deadline day imposed by coach Jose Mourinho for the club to complete any new signings.

“He has come for a medical and negotiations are ongoing,” a Chelsea spokeswoman said on Monday.

Tiago was a member of Portugal’s Euro 2004 squad.

Chelsea also hope to complete the signing of Ivory Coast and Marseille striker Didier Drogba within the next 48 hours.
