Bolton Wanderers have confirmed that Danish midfielder Stig Tofting will appeal against a four-month jail sentence for assault.

But the club have confirmed that Tofting will not play for them again until the appeal action has been resolved.

The tenacious midfielder was sentenced to the jail term following an attack on a Copenhagen restaurant manager during a welcome home party for Denmark’s Worldup squad.

The player’s agent Karsten Aarbriink remains optimistic that there will be an amicable resultion. ‘I have been very satisfied with the way Bolton have handled the situation,’ he said.

‘They have been very professional and very suppportive. We don’t know yet when Stig’s appeal will be heard.’

A club statement read: ‘Bolton Wanderers Football Clubis aware that Stig Tofting has appealed against his four-month jail sentence. The club is assessing its options and will not be hurried into making a decision.’
