Tottenham have signed Portuguese international defender Ricardo Rocha.

Benfica have agreed to sell the 28-year-old for an undisclosed fee thought to be around £3m.

“Ricardo is an accomplished defender who gives us further options and brings considerable experience,” said Spurs sporting director Damien Comolli.

Rocha, who has six caps for Portugal, may make his debut against Arsenal on Wednesday in the first leg of their Carling Cup semi-final at White Hart Lane.

“He has played at the highest level in European competition and is also a current Portuguese international,” Comolli added.

“Ricardo has shown a great desire to come to White Hart Lane and will no doubt prove to be a valuable addition to the squad at this important time.”
