Toulouse coach Erick Mombaert has confirmed the club have held talks with Newcastle winger Laurent Robert.

Robert has made it clear he is unhappy life at St James Park following a series of disputes with manager Graeme Souness.

Toulouse would like to bring him back to France.

“I confirm that we were in talks with Laurent Robert,” said Mombaert.

“We met, but for the moment nothing is done.

“There remains for him one year of his contract with Newcastle and I do not know where he is with negotiations with them.”

The main stumbling block to any move would be Robert’s wage demands. Unless the former PSG winger is prepared to take a substantial pay cut, a return to his homeland seems unlikely.
