Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart admits he has never played in a game quite like his side’s 4-1 win over FC Twente.

Spurs picked up their first-ever Champions League victory after an absorbing encounter at White Hart Lane, with Van der Vaart missing a penalty before scoring with an excellent volley and then getting sent off.

In a Group A match that saw three penalty kicks, the Dutch midfielder’s effort in the first-half was tipped onto the post by goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov, but he redeemed himself by opening the scoring in the 47th minute.

But the Dutchman’s night took a further twist on the hour mark when he picked up a second booking and will now miss the next Champions League clash with Inter.

“Of course after the red card it was difficult,” he told Sky Sports. “I was worried we wouldn’t win the game but in the end the guys played fantastic.

“It was a strange game, also for me. I scored, missed a penalty and was also sent off.

“I’ve never played a game like that before.”

Van der Vaart was disappointed to now be missing the upcoming trip to the Giuseppe Meazza on 20th October, but has faith in his team-mates can get the job done.

“They are going to win for me,” he added.
