Arsenal are confident Jens Lehmann will sign a one-year extension to his current contract.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper was looking for a two-year deal and spoke about the possibility of returning to Germany if he was offered the security of a longer contract.

However, such an offer hass not been forthcoming and Arsenal’s manager, Arsene Wenger, is confident Lehmann will remain in London.

“I expect him to stay,” said Wenger. “It’s a bit optimistic to think he’d tell us that he wants to stay [with talks ongoing] but I expect a decision before the end of April.”

Lehmann has indicated that he expects to finalise his plans shortly. “I think there will be a decision within the next few days or next week,” he said.

“I would like to play here, I have always said I would like to stay but no decision has been made yet.”
