Portugal playmaker Luis Figo admits that the players can only blame themselves for their shock defeat to the United States.

“We have to recognise that we made some mistakes that in normal conditions we would not have committed,” Figo said.

“We lost because of these mistakes and these cannot happen in atop competition like this one and when you are 3-0 down it is very difficult to recover.

“We tried everything to recover and we had some chances in the second half to at least draw the match, but we now have to accept this result and think about the next two games.”

“It wasn’t because of our physical condition that we lost the game,” he added.

“It was because of our mistakes, and without a good physical condition our team would not be able to try everything that they did in the second half to at least draw the match.”
