Welshman John Toshack was today celebrating an ideal start to his new Italian career as coach of Serie B club Catania.

In his first formal match in charge the former Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Sporting Lisbon coach guided Catania to a 2-0 win over Palermo in the all-important Sicily derby. Victory edged Catania up to 15th in the 20-team devision.

Toshack said: “I don’t have a magic wand. I just asked the players to give it everything they had, particularly in the opening exchanges when we thought Palermo would try to take control of the game. We caught them ideally.”

Catania won with goals midway through each half from Cordone and Oliveira.
