Internazionale captain Javier Zanetti believes the club should do everything in its’ power to bring Lazio defender Alessandro Nesta to the San Siro.

“He (Nesta) is simply fantastic and there aren’t many like him,’ said Zanetti. ‘We have to make an even greater effort to get him.’

Inter have emerged as the most likely candidate to sign Nesta but negotiations between the two clubs have foundered in recent days over the terms of the deal. Lazio are insisting that Cristiano Doni is included in part-exchange but Inter are refusing to sanction the release of the Italian international midfielder and would prefer to offload striker Nicola Ventola.

Regardless of the Nesta situation, Zanetti is convinced that the club’s summer signings Mathias Almeyda and Umit Davala have already strengthened the squad.

“Without taking anything away from those who have left for other clubs, the players bought ensure the squad is stronger than last year,” he said.

“Let’s hope we can be front-runners again. Almeyda, I know from Argentina, is an excellent midfielder. He did very well at Lazio and was unlucky at Parma. When he is in form he can be invaluable in the centre of midfield.”
