Real Madrid midfielder Zinedine Zidane is expected to clarify his future at a news conference called for Wednesday in Madrid.

Press speculation suggests the three-times winner of the World Player of the Year award is set to announce his retirement from the game after the World Cup finals in Germany.

Spanish newspaper AS reported on Tuesday that “Zidane will quit football after the World Cup”.

The 33-year-old, who led France to victory in the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, has hinted before that he may not fulfil the final year of his contract with Real.

Zidane became the world’s most expensive footballer when Real signed him from Juventus for £37m in 2001.
