Result: Germany 4-0 Portugal

Scorers:

Germany:

  • Muller 11, 45+1, 78
  • Hummels 32

Venue: Arena Fonte Nova, Salvador

Attendance: 51,081

Match overview: This will be Germany’s 100th match at a World Cup, making them the first nation to reach the Century mark. Cristiano Ronaldo has only scored twice in 10 previous World Cup matches. He scored a penalty in Portugal’s 2-0 win over Iran in 2006 and their final goal in their 7-0 thrashing of North Korea four years ago.

Key moment: Pepe’s idiotic red card. Portugal were already trailing 2-0 at this stage, but having to play with ten men for nearly an hour, ended the game as a contest.

Man of the match: Thomas Muller. Like many prolific goalscorers the 24-year-old has the precious knack of being in the right place at the right time. The forward clearly relishes World Cup football – his hat-trick against Portugal took his tally to 8 goals in 7 matches at the finals.

Matter of fact: This is the first time Portugal have ever conceded four goals at a World Cup match.

Talking point: With the game already won by half-time, the second half was little more than a training exercise for Germany. However, there were glimpses in the first half of the variety of attacking options available to Jochim Low, that should mark them as serious contenders at Brazil 2014.
