Half-time

England 0-0 Russia

The most one-sided match at Euro 2016 so far, but England have got nothing to show for their first-half dominance. A worry for Roy Hodgson, but it is Russia coach Leonid Slutsky who will be the more concerned given that his team have been pinned back for almost the entire half.

Wales celebrate

Hal Robson-Kanu celebrates after scoring Wales winner against Slovakia.

Full-time

Wales 2-1 Slovakia

Wales: Gareth Bale 80, Hal Robson-Kanu 80

Slovakia: Ondrej Duda 61

Wales kicked off their Euro 2016 game with a win in an open, but scrappy encounter in Bordeaux. Gareth Bale opened the scoring for Wales with a long range free kick which Slovak keeper Matúš Kozáčik should have saved. Slovakia ofered little in the first half but they were a different proposition after the break and duly equalised through substitute Ondrej Duda 61. The game seemed to be drifting away from Wales, but substitute Hal Robson-Kanu struck the winner with ten minutes remaining.

You can read World Soccer editor, Gavin Hamilton’s verdict on Wales’ victory here.

Goal!

Wales 2-1 Slovakia

  • Hal Robson-Kanu 80

Substitute Hal Robson-Kanu shins the ball home from 10-yards after Aaron Ramsey’s pass. Ramsey had actually played the ball to himself but stumbled and it fell kindly to Robson-Kanu. Can Wales hang on?

Duda slovakia goal

Goal!

Wales 1-1 Slovakia

  • Ondrej Duda 61

Slovakia are level through substitute Ondrej Duda, who had only been on the pitch for a few seconds. Robert Mak is the architect of the goal, bursting down the right flank and squaring to Duda who lets the ball run across his body before placing a low left-foot drive into the corner of the net.

17:48 BST

Half-time

Wales 1-0 Slovakia

Wales lead through Bale’s 10th mionute free-kick and in truth, they have looked very comfortable in Bordeaux. Other than the early Hamsik scare Slovakia have offered little going forward. Moreover, they are fortunate not to have conceded a penalty when Skrtel barged into Williams. Speaking of the  midfielder, or ‘Joniesta‘ as he is known (in comparison to the maestro from Spain, Andrés Iniesta) we have an exclusive interview with the Crystal Palace man.

Penalty appeal

Wales 1-0 Slovakia

Wales have a very strong case for a penalty when Martin Skrtel barges into Jonny Williams in the Slovakia penalty area. Williams is poleaxed but the referee waves play on. Skrtel got away with that one.

Gareth Bale Wales Slovakia

Cometh the hour…Gareth Bale delivers for Wales.

Goal!

Wales 1-0 Slovakia

  • Gareth Bale 10

It’s a free-kick to Wales 25 yards out, just left of centre. Up steps Gareth Bale, who curls the ball over the wall and beyond the outstretched arm of the Slovakia goalkeeper Matúš Kozáčik. The keeper will not be happy with his positioning there – had he not moved to his left, it would have been a simple save.

******************************

17:06BST

Close!

Wales 0-0 Slovakia

Gareth Bale is robbed by Marek Hamsik and the Slovak forward advances on the Welsh penalty area where he bamboozles three defenders before firing a low shot past Danny Ward. Fortunately for Wales, Ben Davies does brilliantly to divert the ball off the line. A lucky escape for Chris Coleman’s side.

Albania 0-1 Switzerland

Switzerland prevail, but they were pushed to the limit by a plucky, but resilient Albania side reduced to ten men for nearly an hour. There were chances for both teams, not least for Switzerland’s Seferovic, who had a wasteful afternoon in Lens. But, ultimately, it was the poor finishing of Albania that cost them the game.

Save!

Albania 0-1 Switzerland

Swiss substitute Breel Embolo plays a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Haris Seferovic whose effort is brilliantly saved by Etrit Berisha. Apart from his misjudgement which led to the Switzerland goal, the Albanian keeper has done pretty well today.

Half-time

Albania 0-1 Switzerland

Switzerland are ahead, and with Albania reduced to ten men, they look in control. The loss of Lorik Cana appears to have ended any hope Gianni de Biasi’s side had of getting back into the game. Frsutratingly for Albania, it came at time when they were enjoying their best spell of the match.

Lorik Cana red card

Albania’s Lorik Cana leaves the pitch after being shown a second yellowcard against Switzerland.

Red card!

Albania 0-1 Switzerland

      • 37 Lorik Cana

Lorik Cana the Albania captain picks up a second yellow card after he slips and deliberately handles the ball in a tussle with Swiss number 9 Seferovic. No complaints from the defender after that decision. From the resulting free-kick, Blerim Dzemaili slams a shot against the post. Albania wobbling here.

Switzerland-save

Close!

Albania 0-1 Switzerland

Superb save from Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer as he spreads himself wide to block the goalbound shot of Armando Sadiku. The Albanian forward should have buried that.

Goal!

Albania 0-1 Switzerland

      • Fabian Schar 5

Xherdan Shaqiri swings in a corner but the goalkeeper Sali Berisha was nowhere near it and Switzerland defender Fabian Schar can hardly believe his luck as he nods into an empty net. A perfect start for the Swiss.

Albania v Switzerland…

An intriguing backdrop to today’s first match when two brothers could come face to face as Switzerland meet Albania. New Arsenal signing Granit Xhaka will lock horns with his brother Taulant Xhaka in Lens. The brothers, whose parents migrated to Switzerland from the Albanian Kosovo in 1989 when it was still a part of Yugoslavia, were born in Basel and represented Switzerland at youth levels. While Granit opted to play for the country of his birth, his brother, Taulant chose Albania.

We’ve got interviews with both coaches, Switzerland’s Vladimir Petkovic, and his Albanian counterpart Gianni de Biasi, as well as tactical analyses of both teams, player interviews, and profiles of each squad member.
