Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Arteta has warned Everton they must increase their pay offer if they wish to complete his signing.

The 23-year-old midfield joined Everton on loan last January and impressed as they qualified for the Champions League. He is keen to make the deal permanent, but is unhappy with the financial package being offered by the club.

But he said: “Everton’s latest offer is not what I’m looking for. I want to feel more valued by the club.

“If I take the deal Everton are offering I would be earning less than I would in Spain.

“If Everton are going to play in the Champions League, they have a certain amount of money coming in guaranteed, so they should make an effort with players’ contracts.

“Right now I feel closer to starting pre-season training with Sociedad than I do starting training with Everton.”
