Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has dismissed reports that 24-year-old Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso is moving to Real Madrid.

“There has been no truth in stories about Xabi Alonso,” said Benitez.

“We have had no official contact and for sure he is staying here, we do not want to sell him.”

Instead, Benitez wants to sign players and added: “We need to find other players who are stronger to make us stronger,” he added. “We have some names.

“You can see them in the paper or watching the news and we are looking at some of them, but we cannot get all of them.”

Liverpool are expected to bid for Birmingham winger Jermaine Pennant, 23, as they look to further strengthen their squad following the signings of Craig Bellamy, Fabio Aurelio and Mark Gonzalez.

“I am happy with the young players and they need more experience before being thrown in, that’s why we will continue to work in the transfer market,” Benitez said.
