Group A
Rapid Vienna 0-1 Bayern Munich

A fortuitous 60th minute goal by Paolo Guerrero – which the player himself described as ‘comical’ – was enough to ensure victory for Bayen Munich in a tightly contested Group A tie at the Ernst Happael stadium last night.

Lucio’s cross from deep on the left channel found the advancing Roy McKaay, whOSE header Vienna keeper Helge Payar could only parry, ensuring that the ball rebounded off the right shin of the Peruvian striker, who had only been on the field some ten minutes.

“I didn’t even see the ball”, commented Guerroro after the game. “But I was in the right position at the right time. I think it was the most comical goal I have ever scored.”

Even crueler for the home side – who’s attacking incision had yielded a number of good chances – was that they missed a penalty in the last ten minutes.

After twice hitting the woodwork first from Stefan Hofman’s free-kick, then Andreas Dober’s lilting header, Valachovic sent his spot-kick wide of Kahn’s post.
