Chelsea ownwer Roman Abramovich has revealed that the Premier League club are poised to sign Roma’s Romanian defender Christian Chivu.

Roma only signed the Romanian international captain in the summer from Ajax, but financial problems at the Serie A club have resulted in them struggling to meet payments.

Chivu has also interested Manchester United, but the Russian is confident the defender will soon sign for Chelsea.

“Chivu will come to England only for Chelsea and he will be my golden boy,” Abramovich told the News of the World.

“We want Chivu and we will make a better offer than Manchester United.”

The player’s agent Victor Becali confirmed that Chivu could soon be on his way to England.

“It is true that Manchester United and Chelsea have contacted us,” said Becali. “Christian could be playing in England if the deal is right.”
