Utrecht defender David Di Tommaso died in his sleep of heart failure, his club have confirmed.

The 26-year-old Di Tommaso “died of an acute heart failure,” probably as a result of an irregular heartbeat, Utrecht announced in a statement. “The autopsy carried out in the last few days has shown that.”

The club said further tests were under way to confirm the exact cause of death after Di Tommaso was discovered dead in his sleep on Monday night.

Earlier, the player’s agent Mickael Manuellohad said that police had found no suspicious circumstances. “The police did a toxin analysis and the first results did not show anything,” Manuello said. “Other tests will be carried out to prove David died of a heart attack. That should kill the nasty rumours going around.”

French-born Di Tommaso is survived by his wife and a two-year-old son. He was buried in France on Saturday.
