Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has been linked with a return to his former club Benfica.

Carlos Alberto Quaresma is a candidate for the club’s presidential elections this month and has pledged to appoint the 58-year-old.

Eriksson has had two spells at Benfica, who are currently managed by Fernando Santos.

“I will win and Eriksson will be my coach,” said Quaresma, 51. “It is a place where he has some great friends.”

Eriksson took charge of the Lisbon club for the first time in 1982, winning the title in his first season and taking the club to the Uefa Cup final.

Another title followed in 1984 before Eriksson moved to Italy and Roma. He returned to Benficain 1989 and led the club to the 1990 European Cup final and anotehr championship success in 1991.

Eriksson has been out of work since England were knocked out of the World Cup at the quarter-final stage in July.
